Born in Roanoke, Virginia in the Blue Ridge Mountains, Benjy Barnhart studied drawing and painting at the University of Virginia with Philip Geiger and others, then at the New York Studio School under the painter Graham Nickson. He received residency scholarships at the renowned Yale University Summer Art School and the Chautauqua Institute. His work has been supported with scholarships and has received various awards in Germany and in the USA. He has been a lecturer in drawing and painting at Akthof since 2011.
